He has raised significant research funding, including awards from the Carnegie Trust, Natural Environment Research Council, Science and Technology Foundation Council, UK Space Agency, and Leverhulme Trust. Having contributed to >100 published peer reviewed articles, Mark’s work haddresses issues such as the evolution of planetary surfaces, the rate of human evolution, the timing of mass extinctions, rates of environmental change and the timing of ore genesis. His pioneering developments in mass spectrometry have redefined the limits of the Ar/39 dating technique and have required he forge close working relationships with industry.

My research interests are in Late Quaternary geochronology, with specific interest in radiocarbon dating and tephrochronology, as well as broader aspects of Quaternary palaeoclimatology. I specialise in radiocarbon dating and, in particular, radiocarbon calibration. I am also interested in Bayesian statistical modelling of chronological data.

My research centres around the evolution of mountain belts that form when ocean basins close and continents collide. I determine how and when deeply buried rocks record the timing of their burial and exhumation, as well as using geochemical data to constrain burial, transformation and exhumation processes and mechanisms.
